Does Pineapple Juice Speed Up Wisdom Tooth Recovery?

After you get your wisdom teeth removed, it will take some time to heal and recover, and you’ll experience some bleeding, swelling, and discomfort. Naturally, you’ll want to speed up the recovery process as much as you can so that you can get back to your normal routine.

And one “miracle cure” that’s been discussed quite a bit on TikTok and social media is drinking pineapple juice before their procedure to help speed up wisdom tooth extraction recovery. How much truth is there to this trend, and how is it supposed to work? Read on to learn more in this blog from Five Pines Dental.

Why Would Pineapple Juice Help With Recovery After Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

In the TikTok and social media posts that have made the rounds, some users suggest drinking as much as 64 ounces (a half-gallon) of pineapple juice before getting wisdom tooth extraction surgery.

And, as far as we can tell, there’s no scientific proof that this will help with pain and discomfort. Some people report that drinking pineapple juice before surgery is effective, but there haven’t been any scientific studies that have confirmed this.

There may be a kernel of truth to this trend, though. Pineapple juice is high in bromelain, an enzyme that’s known to have anti-inflammatory effects, and could help with swelling and pain.

We Also Don’t Recommend Drinking Pineapple Juice After Wisdom Tooth Extraction

So, can you drink pineapple juice before your wisdom tooth extraction? Sure! It won’t hurt to have a glass. But it’s not a “miracle cure,” and you certainly don’t need to drink a half-gallon of it before your appointment at Five Pines Dental.

And after your surgery is done, we don’t recommend drinking pineapple juice at all, at least for a few days. The same goes for any other acidic beverage like orange juice. Acidic drinks can actually cause more inflammation and may cause the extraction sites in your mouth to hurt more, not less.

So, How Can I Speed Up Wisdom Tooth Recovery?

The answer is obvious. Follow the instructions provided to you by your dentist. Dentists like Dr. Richard Zeller have years of experience extracting wisdom teeth. After your appointment at our office, our team will give you a full list of steps that you’ll need to follow to keep your mouth healthy and speed up your wisdom tooth recovery as much as possible.

For example, you can take ibuprofen or a similar NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) to help with pain. Along with lots of other steps, you will need to eat mostly soft foods, avoid heavy exercise and exertion for a few days, and avoid using a straw or smoking.

It’s not a “trendy” solution, but if you pay attention, follow Dr. Zeller’s instructions, and take care of your mouth, you’ll be back to your normal routine in no time. Most patients can get back to work within a day or two, feel a lot better after a week, and are fully healed within about two weeks.
