To begin your treatment, Dr. Zeller will clean the treatment site and numb your mouth. We also offer sedation dentistry in downtown Portland for anxious patients. Then, Dr. Zeller will use a dental drill to gently remove decayed and damaged tooth material from your cavity.
After prepping your cavity, Dr. Zeller will choose a tooth-colored composite material that matches your tooth perfectly, and apply it to the cavity. Then, he will shape and harden your composite filling and trim it to restore the shape and function of your tooth.
Once the general shape of your filling looks right, Dr. Zeller will have you bite down on a special type of paper so he can check the fit. He will make any necessary final adjustments. Then, when your filling fits perfectly, Dr. Zeller will send you home to enjoy your newly-restored tooth.
At Five Pines Dental, Dr. Zeller exclusively offers composite tooth-colored fillings. These fillings are made from a special blend of dental resin and glass particles. Compared to traditional metal fillings, composite fillings have quite a few benefits.
First, they look and feel much more natural, since your filling will be the same color as your natural tooth. Composite fillings also require the removal of less tooth material, and bond more tightly to your enamel. Tooth-colored fillings are also free from mercury and other metals, unlike amalgam fillings.
Composite resin fillings have a typical lifespan of about 5-7 years, though it’s possible for them to last 10+ years if you take great care of your teeth. Not at all. The dental filling process is minimally invasive, and just involves the removal of some of the outer layer of your tooth.
